In the world of Code Geass, empires have expanded and fought until Britannia can be described as the world's sole surviving super power. The European Union stands against Britannia, but little more is known about it. In addition, the Chinese Federation is also known to stand independently, although it is also unknown. The above map shows Britannian, former Japanese, and what is presumable Chinese Federation territory.

Seven years prior to the series, The Holy Britannian Empire took over the neutral nation of Japan over underground resources. In this battle, Britannia introduced the Knightmare Frames which caught the Japanese military off guard. Since then, the island nation has been stripped of its freedom, rights, and name. It is now known as Area Eleven and its citizens are Elevens.

The state of various locations will be maintained here:

• Area Eighteen:

  Unknown location, presumably in the Middle East, which fell to Cornelia prior to her coming to Area Eleven.

• Chinese Federation:

  An East Asian nation. Its territory and political situation are unknown.

• European Union:

  Little is known about the EU other than that it is sufficiently strong to be fighting the HEB without being overrun. It is known to even be capable of launching an offensive against HEB as mentioned by Corneila.

• Holy Britannian Empire:

  Controls more than one third of the world. Its capital as well as the real world country (England is the best bet, considering Britannia, but no evidence is shown either way in the series) it corresponds to is unknown.

• Japan:

  Occupied by Britannia, renamed Area Eleven, currently experiencing a growing rebellion centered on the mysterious Zero.

• Western Hemisphere:

  Part of the Britannian Empire.
