Episode 2: Confrontation

Episode 02

Light is sitting in class writting. He is then asked to recite a line from his book. His teacher is impressed and not surprised. When class finally ends, Ryuk streches and complains about how boring it is. Light will not respond to Ryuk, which makes him annoyed. Light reminds him that people can still hear him talking. Light tells some people at school that he is busy, but Ryuk says that he is not. Light then says that he has the very important job of writting names in his note.

Back in Light's room, Ryuk asks why Light works so hard. Light explains that he has to keep his grades up, sleep, and write as many names in the note as possible. He has to write as many names as possible if he is going to make his new world.

Just then, his sister tries to get in his locked room. She needs help with her homework, so he puts his note in the drawer of his desk and lets her in. As she sits down at the desk, Ryuk explains that if she touches the note, she will see him too.

In a large hall with a screen, we see a large group of men discussing the death of many criminals. Although some of the men suggest letting it be because only criminals are dying, others yell that murder is murder. The arguement continues, with accusations going toward the FBI and the CIA. Because of the lack of evidence, someone suggest that they need to bring in L. the Japanese investigator explains that L is an unrivaled investigative genius who has solved all of his cases. There are objections based on his arrogance and the fact that they do not know who he is. Just after this happens, Watari, L's sole contact, and he announces that L has already begun his investigation. Through a laptop, L introduces himself to the ICPO.

Light and Ryuk are seen in an abandoned building. Ryuk asks why they are there, and he explains that it is because carrying the note on him is too dangerous. Before, he thought he could explain the note to his family as a list of criminals for use when he becomes a detective, but now that he knows what will happen if someone touches it, he worries that a mistake could make him kill his family. He then pours a liquid and lights a fire.

L states that the difficulty of this case is in its unprecidented scope. He declares that it is an atroucious act of mass murder. He says that it can only be solved with full support from all members of the ICPO. He say that he requires additional cooperation from the Japan's National Police Agency. When asked why, he says that, whether an individual or group, the guilty party is most likely Japanese, and, if not they are hiding in Japan. He says that he can provide proof of this after he confronts the culprit.

Light has hidden the note in his desk. Ryuk points out that the key is in the lock, and Light says that this is intentional. If you open the drawer, there is a normal diary sitting there. The real note is hidden in the bottom of the drawer. Using the ink resevior from a pen, you can, from under the drawer, push open the drawer's fake bottom to reveal the note. The real diary will most likely satisfy anyone's curiosity. However, if someone realized that there was a fake bottom and tried to force it open, they would connect a circuit and set the note on fire. Ryuk says that the biggest issue humans have had with the note was hidding it, but no one had ever gone as far as he did. Light feels that the risk of a house fire is nothing compared to the risk of being executed.

A news report in public states that another criminal has died of a heart attack. As we see images of different people in the steets, we hear two people discussing the deaths. One of them blames the police, but the other denies that the police have the power and then says that it is Kira.

Light asks Ryuk to come look at his computer. He is at a website called "The Legend of Kira the Savior". Light explains that the name Kira is probably taken from the English word killer. Light isn't happy about that, but he accepts it as his title. The media has not picked up on the trend, but the people of the world have sensed it; they know that someone out there is passing rightous judgement. Light explains that in public, people will claim that no one should die, but on the internet the innocent support Kira because they have nothing to fear. The guilty are on the run hidding from an invisible enemy.

Another broadcast begins. The ICPO is holding a confrence. A man comes on the screen identifing himself as Lind L. Taylor, otherwise known as L. This man announces the crimes of Kira and declares that he will catch him. Lind L. Taylor then explains that what Kira is doing evil. This sends Light into a fit of rage; he writes down Lind L. Taylor's name, and in forty seconds Lind L. Taylor dies of a heart attack.

As the man is carried away, the letter L appears on the screen. A stunned voice comes in over the television. He says he wanted to run this test just in case, but he never believed that it would actually happen. He says, "Kira..it seems you can kill people without having to be there in person." He then explains that the man Kira killed was secretly arrested criminal, not L. Then he assures Kira that L is real, he does exist. Then L tells him, "Now! Try to kill me! What's wrong? Hurry up! Come on! Right now!" People in the streets are in awe. Some yell in support of Kira. Kira cannot kill L because he does not know his name or face. L thanks him for the clue. In addition, L announces that the broadcase was not worldwide as announced, but it was only aired in the Kanto region of Japan. L now knows where Kira is. He then explains that he knows his first victim, the man who held the hostages, was little more than an experiment, so Kira has not been killing for very long. L explains that he did not expect things to go this well, but it won't be long until he is arrested now. L wants to know how Kira can commit these murders, but he is willing to wait to find out until he captures him.

Light is happy to accept L's challenge. They must both hunt the other down without knowing a name or a face. The first one revealed will die.

Ryuk echoes his earlier statement by saying, "Humans are soo much fun."

Both L and Light claim, "I will hunt you down where ever you are hiding and I will eliminate you. I am justice!"
