This jutsu splits the users chakra equally into several different clones. They are solid clones; not illusions. Throughout the series it has been Naruto's specialty.
There seem to be two versions of this jutsu. The first is described above. The second is what Naruto learns in the first episode, the Multi-Shadow Clone jutsu. This is a much more advanced technique and uses much more chakra to make many more clones.
