BackgroundNaruto is the vesile in which the Fourth Hokage sealed the spirit of the Nine-Tailed Fox. As such, the chakra of the fox can be used by Naruto. In addition, he has marks on this faces that bear resemblance to whiskers of a fox.
The Fox within him caused great fear from fellow villagers in the Leaf village. We do not know what became of his parents or who they even are, but we do know that he was alone for most of his life. The pain of his loneliness was unbearable, so he acted out to get attention. This continued until Iruka saved his life and explained that they were the same.
Naruto is a reckless fighter who always goes in head first. Naruto fights physically using Shadow Clones. He seems to have little skill with genjutsu, and his ninjutsu is currently limited. His chakra use is extremely inefficient; however, his reserves of energy and stamina are "hardly even human". In times of extreme emotion and pain, Naruto can easily summon the nearly limitless chakra of the Fox in order to perform extreme jutsu and continue his fierce fighting. His main use of the Fox's chakra so far is in summoning Gamabuntu, the chief toad.
Naruto was the class clown at the academy. Being outcast as he was, he was forced to screw around in order to get attention. When he failed his third graduation exam, Mizuki told him about a 'secret' way to graduate. According to Mizuki's instructions, Naruto stole the village's Sacred Scroll of Sealing and learned the Multi-Shadow Clone jutsu. This was all a plot by Mizuki to gain the scroll for himself, but Iruka arrived in time to save Naruto. Iruka went so far as to take a huge shuriken in the back to save Naruto. He then told Naruto that they were the same. Despite this show of dedication, Naruto ran away out of fear and confusion. Mizuki had revealed, for the first time, to Naruto that the Nine-Tailed Fox was sealed within him. While searching for Naruto, Mizuki and Naruto began to fight. Just as Mizuki was about to kill Iruka, he said that a beast like Naruto wants the scroll for his own power and vengeance. Iruka then said that Mizuki was right; this panicked Naruto. Then Iruka said, "that is how beasts are, but that's not who Naruto is. He is nothing like that. Naruto is one of a kind. Works hard, puts his whole heart into it. Sure he messes up sometimes, and everyone jumps on him. But his suffering only makes him stronger. That is what separates him from being a beast. So you are wrong, he is nothing like the Nine-Tailed Fox. He is Naruto Uzumaki of the Village Hidden in the Leaves." This speech puts Naruto in tears. For the first time ever, he feels loved, and he will not let anyone take that from him. When Mizuki taunts and prepares to attack Iruka, Naruto interferes. He declares to Mizuki, "if you ever lay a hand on my sensei, I'll kill you!" Naruto then uses the Multi-Shadow Clone jutsu to create hundreds of Narutos to defeat Mizuki. This action gained him graduation from the academy
Naruto is assigned to squad seven with Sakura and Sasuke. They perform a few minor missions, and then get to escort Gato to the Land of Waves. Gato is being hunted by several ninja, so the squad is repeatedly forced to fight. the demon brothers attacked. They seemed to have killed Kakashi, so Sasuke took charge pinning the brothers to a tree with a kunai threw their chain. Kakashi had actually used a replacement jutsu, so he ended the fight after that. Naruto was angered by how 'cool' Sasuke was during the fight. In addition, Naruto had been poisoned in the attack. In a stunning move, he stabbed himself to allow the poison to leave with his blood.
When Zabuza first attacked, Naruto and Sasuke used a combined Shadow Clone and Shadow Shuriken attack to free Kakashi from Zabuza's grip. Naruto arrived late to the battle on the bridge and, in an effort be clever, he successfully sneaked into Haku's trap. Naruto repeatedly used Shadow Clones to attempt to escape; this allowed Sasuke to figure out Haku's jutsu. Sasuke had managed to begin dodging Haku's attacks and tracking his movements. Sasuke had discovered the power of the Sharingan. Just as Sasuke gains the ability to see Haku, Naruto faints from exhaustion. Sasuke jumps in front of a barrage of needles to save Naruto. Seeing Sasuke apparently dead in his defense, Naruto becomes outraged to the point that the seal on the fox was loosened. The chakra of the fox seeped into Naruto giving him the power to defeat Haku. Naruto's body became beast like and he charged Haku, knocking him out of the ice. Haku begged for Naruto to kill him, and after a lot of explaining on Haku's part, Naruto agreed. Just before Naruto attacked, Haku left and threw himself between Zabuza and Kakashi to save Zabuza's life. During this fight, Naruto learned the import lesson that "real strength comes from protecting someone precious." Squad seven and the entire village then drove off Gato's thugs. Upon their departure, Gato decided to name the bridge after Naruto because, like Naruto, the bridge brought courage back to the Land of Waves.
In the first of the Chunin exams, Naruto did not know any of the answers. Despite the threat of never being in the exams again, Naruto did not quit. He took the tenth question and, because of this, passed without answering a single question.
In the second exam, Naruto was eaten by Orochimaru's summoned snake. He escaped by exploding the snake with many Shadow Clones. When he caught up to his squad, he found Sasuke acting cowardly and meek. He hit Sasuke and took the scroll. Then, as Sasuke cowered, Naruto fought off Orochimaru using the chakra of the Nine-Tailed Fox. He even managed to hold a larger snake away from Sasuke. In a demeaning voice meant to get back for Sasuke's earlier comments, Naruto asked Sasuke, "Hey kid, you're not hurt, are you? You scardy cat." Orochimaru would not be stopped, so he placed a Five Prong Seal over Naruto's seal. This caused Naruto to pass out. He did not wake until after Sasuke had fought Orochimaru, received the curse mark, and fought of the Sound ninja. After coming to, Naruto nearly opened the scroll, and thus, was nearly disqualified. Fortunately, Kabuto arrived in time to stop them and help them gain their other scroll.
Naruto fought Kiba in the preliminaries of the third exam. He was an underdog by all measures, but his persistance and stamina allowed him to hold out. Eventually, Naruto became lucky when he farted in Kiba's face. The distraction for Kiba's super powered nose allowed Naruto to use his own variation of Sasuke's Lion's Barrage - the Uzumaki Barrage.
During the month rest between the preliminaries and the third exam, Naruto began to train under Ebisu; however, by sheer luck Naruto met Jiraiya who took over his training. Jiraiya released the Five Prong seal on Naruto while training him to walk on water. After Naruto regained control of his chakra, Jiraiya decided to teach Naruto the summoning jutsu. Naruto signed a blood contract with the toads. Initially, he was only able summon tadpoles. Soon though, Jiraiya figured out how to bring out the Fox's chakra. Jiraiya threw Naruto into a seemingly bottomless hole so that Naruto would realize that he had no choice but to call out the Fox's chakra on his own. When Naruto did so, he went overboard and summoned Gamabunta, the chief toad. Naruto then spent the entire day riding on Gamabunta's back in order to gain his respect.
During the third exam, Naruto fought Neji. Neji used his Byakugan and Gentle Fist taijutsu's chakra blocking power to drain Naruto of all his chakra. After giving a speech about winning, Naruto realized that he did not know what he would do. Just then, he realized that he felt the same as he did during training with the pervy sage. He then summoned the Nine-Tailed Fox's chakra and shocked Neji. They charged at each other and Naruto declared that he would change the way of the Hyuga after he became Hokage. To finish the fight, Naruto used a clone to distract Neji as Naruto dug underneath him. Naruto managed to jump from underground and knock Neji out.
When the attack on the Leaf village starts, Naruto is caught in the Kabuto's genjutsu. Sakura releases him from the genjutsu along with Shikamaru. The three, along with Pakkun, then go after Sasuke. Upon finding Sasuke, he is beaten down and Naruto has to save him. After being knocked around for a while, as usual, Naruto decides to fight back. He tried to summon Gamabunta, but he got Gamakitchi instead because of a lack of chakra. He wraps a paper bomb around his kunai and charges at Gaara's partly transformed form. Naruto then uses Shadow Clones for his Clone Bodyslam. Another clone then throws the real Naruto behind Gaara. Here, Gaara creates another clone to jump at Gaara from behind. He lands a direct blow with his kunai on Gaara's butt. After being knocked away, the paper bomb explodes, eroding Gaara's defenses. Sasuke stands to tell Naruto to take Sakura and flee. This inspires Naruto to fight Gaara off. He summons an immense amount of his own chakra and uses the Multi-Shadow Clone jutsu. He attacks Gaara with Everywhere Shuriken, 2K Uzumaki Barrage, and then his Barrage of Four Thousand Kicks. Despite the damage Naruto has dealt him, Gaara manages to destroy all of Naruto's clones.
Gaara had summoned the Shukaku's body. He then surrounds Naruto with Sand and prepares to use his Sand Burial jutsu. Just before he is crushed, Naruto wipes some blood from a wound and summons Gamabunta with the Fox's chakra. Gaara was impressed, and, after a little explanation by Gamakitchi, Gamabunta agreed to help Naruto. Gamabunta and Naruto fought Gaara until Gaara used the Play Possum jutsu. This released the power of the Shukaku sand spirit. Gamabunta told Naruto that he would have to wake Gaara to stop the fight. Gamabunta could not hold on to Shukaku long enough to allow Naruto to wake Gaara. In order to end the battle, Gamabunta and Naruto preform a combined transformation. Naruto transforms them into the form of the Nine-Tailed Fox. They continue to fight and Gaara is awoken and defeated. Both Naruto and Gaara are exhausted and unable to move. Sasuke and Temari showed up to take them away.
After the attack, Jiraiya took Naruto along as he went off to search for Tsunade. Naruto agreed to the trip to learn a new jutsu that Jiraiya claimed was better that Chidori. While on there trip, they met Itachi and Kisame who were hunting for Naruto. After Jiraiya drove off Itachi and Kisame, he began teaching Naruto his new jutsu and continued to search for Tsunade.
