BackgroundBorn into a lesser branch of the Hyuga clan, Neji has been branded with the "Curse Mark Jutsu". As a member of a lesser branch, his purpose in life is to protect and serve the main branch or suffer the consequences of the curse mark. This imposes a fatalistic view of life on him. His hatred towards the main branch stems from his father's murder for their sake. This hatred is resolved when he learns the truth about his father's death.
Being a member of the Hyuga clan, Neji was also blessed with the kekkei genkai Byakugan, allowing him to see the chakra points of an individual. He can then attack the internal chakra flow by opening and closing these points using the Hyuga's Gentle Fist Taijutsu style: the most effective form of taijutsu in the Left Village. Defensively, the Byakugan allows Neji to see almost 360 degrees and, with the use of the secret ninja art Rotation, his defenses surpass even those of Gaara's sand shell.
In the preliminary rounds, Neji defeats Hinata, a clansman from the main branch. Then, in the final rounds, he closes all of Naruto's chakra points, forcing Naruto to use the chakra of the Nine-Tailed Fox. After being defeated by Naruto, Neji learns that his father sacrificed himself to prevent another war and to protect his twin brother.
