BackgroundBorn an odd looking, no talent, underachiever, Lee's prospects of becoming a ninja started in jeopardy. However, through hard work and determination, he proved the doubters wrong by overcoming every obstacle relationship. One such doubter is his own teammate and arch rival Neji Hyuga. Aside from his aspirations of becoming a ninja, he has deep respect and a father-son h his sensei and role model Might Guy. There is also a special place in his heart for Sakura.
Because he lacks talent in ninjutsu and genjutsu, Lee relies solely on his taijutsu. This pure hand to hand combat strategy requires that his body be in tip-top physical condition. In the chunin exams, his speed and strength are unparalleled. Through ceaseless training, he has also prepared his body to withstand enormous amounts of pain, thus allowing him to open 5 of the chakra gates and release the Hidden Lotus.
Prior to entering the chunin exams, Lee meets Sasuke and picks a fight with him. Before the battle could be decided though, Guy intervenes and ends the fight. In the Forest of Death, Lee tries to defeat 3 Sound Village genin simultaneously, in order to save Sakura and the rest of her unconscious team. He gets beaten, but stalls enough time for other Leaf Village squads to come to their rescue. Lee battles Gaara in the preliminary rounds and is defeated, but the battle revealed how truly powerful these two really are.
