BackgroundSasuke is the sole survivor of the genocide perpetrated on his clan by his brother. After the massacre of his clan, he became obsessed with revenge. All of his training was an attempt to get stronger so that he could beat Itachi. This drove him to being the best at his school and to graduate at the top of his class. He is wildly popular in the Leaf village, especially among girls his age.
Sasuke is a fierce and intelligent fighter. Possessing his clans gift of the Sharingan, Sasuke can easily comprehend, repeat, and counter any ninjutsu and genjutsu thrown at him. In addition, his eyes allow him to keep track of any taijutsu used against him. His incredible powers of observation provided by his Sharingan, along with his great speed, allow him to outmaneuver most opponents. Besides using the Sharingan to his advantage, Saskue is skilled in Fire style jutsu that are beyond his level. His fighting style closely follows Kakashi's because of their many similarities, the least of which is the Sharingan.
Saskue was placed under Kakashi's care along with Naruto and Sakura. During Kakashi's genin test, he was the only one among the three able to touch a bell. He was also the first one willing to give Naruto his food; doing so allowed the three of them to pass the test.
After a series of D rank missions, Naruto got the squad a C rank mission. During the escort mission to the Land of Waves, the demon brothers attacked. They seemed to have killed Kakashi, so Sasuke took charge pinning the brothers to a tree with a kunai threw their chain. Kakashi had actually used a replacement jutsu, so he ended the fight after that. Naruto was angered by how 'cool' Sasuke was during the fight. When Zabuza first attacked, Naruto and Sasuke used a combined Shadow Clone and Shadow Shuriken attack to free Kakashi from Zabuza's grip. When Zabuza reappeared on the bridge, Sasuke faced Haku and matched his speed and strength; however, when Haku unleashed his Crystal Ice Mirrors, Sasuke was trapped. Naruto, in an effort be clever, he successfully sneaked into the trap. Naruto repeatedly used Shadow Clones to attempt to escape; this allowed Sasuke to figure out Haku's jutsu. Sasuke had managed to begin dodging Haku's attacks and tracking his movements. Sasuke had discovered the power of the Sharingan. Just as Sasuke gains the ability to see Haku, Naruto faints from exhaustion. He jumps in front of a barrage of needles to save Naruto. Seeing Sasuke apparently dead in his defense, Naruto becomes outraged to the point that the seal on the fox was loosened. The chakra of the fox seeped into Naruto giving him the power to defeat Haku. After the fight ends, it is revealed that Haku had only knocked Sasuke out.
During the second of the chunin exams, squad seven fought Orochimaru. After initially running in fear, Sasuke fought back after being up classed by Naruto. Using a Sharingan windmill triple attack that was stunning to even Orochimaru, Sasuke was bite by Orochimaru, leaving a curse mark on his shoulder. The curse knocked him out, and he remained unconscious during the attack of the sound genin. When he did wake, he was overwhelmed by the evil curse mark jutsu and broke a sound ninja arms.
In the third exam preliminaries, he fought Yoroi in a weakened state due to the curse mark. He could not use his Sharingan or any jutsu; therefore, he nearly lost. Just when hope was fading, he pulled off but pulled of a great come back move that he called the Lion's Barrage. It was based on the attacks that Lee had previously used on him. After this, Kakashi sealed the curse mark and Sasuke was taken to a hospital to recover. Kabuto nearly killed him while he was in critical condition.
Sasuke could not be found prior to the third exam. He was away training with Kakashi During this training, his speed increased dramatically and he learned Chidori. Sasuke's match with Gaara was repeatedly delayed and he only arrived with seconds left. He amazed everyone with speed rivaling Lee's and by using Chidori which pierced Gaara's Sand Shell. While in the Sand Shell, Gaara began his transformation.
Soon after, the attack on the village began. The proctor told him to pursue Gaara who had retreated. Along the way, he fought and defeated Temari with little effort. When he caught up to Gaara, Kankuro challenged him to a fight, but Shino showed up to fight Kankuro, thus allowing Sasuke to continue after Gaara. When he started to fight Garra, the power of the Shukaku began to come out. Using his Sharingan, Sasuke was barely able to stay alive. He used Chidori to rip apart Gaara's transformed arm causing Gaara the first extreme pain of his life. Unfortunately for Sasuke, this was his second use of Chidori that day and he only had the chakra for two uses. Feeling that he had no other option, Sasuke forced Chidori again. As feared, this brought out the Curse Mark chakra. This of course weakened him so that he was unable to move. Luckily, Naruto and Sakura arrived in time to save him. He marveled at the fight between Naruto and Gaara and was later jealous and angry at Naruto's strength and his own inability to defeat Gaara.
After Kakashi fought Itachi, Sasuke found out due to the stupidity of someone watching after Kakashi. This news, being exactly what Sasuke had worked toward for years, caused Sasuke to go berserk. He left to find Naruto, Itachi's target, with the intent to kill. He arrived just before Naruto was taken away by Itachi. Sasuke charged with Chidori, but he was unable to touch Itachi. He was then hit with Tsukuyomi to show him the murder of his clan. Jiraiya intervened with his Toad Mouth Trap just in time to save Sasuke.
