BackgroundGaara is the son of the Kazekage. He was born as a weapon of the Sand Village with the Shukaku being sealed within him. This cost the life of his mother.
As he was growing up everyone feared him. Kids treated him like a freak, and the adults were petrified and stayed away. After a few years, the Kazekage thought has son was a failed weapon because he could not control the spirit of the sand, so he sent assassins after him. Among these assassins was Yashamaru, the only person who treated him with kindness. Yashamaru held Gaara responsible for the death of his sister, Gaara's mother. With his only loved one turning on him, Gaara went insane.
All of Gaara's attacks are sand based; he manipulates it with his chakra. While fighting, he stands in one position and directs his sand. His sand acts on its own accord in order to protect him from injury. He is also able to direct the sand's defense; this is seen during the final rounds of the Chunin Exams when he forms a ball harder than steel with the sand.
Under extreme conditions, Gaara can use sand to cover his body with a resemblance to the Shukaku. Doing so gives him speed and strength that is nearly unmatchable. In addition to this, he can make a full sized replica of the Shukaku. When pushed to his absolute limit, he can call the demon out and let it control him by using the Play Possum jutsu.
Gaara was originally meant to be the secret weapon that would destroy the Hidden Leaf Village. During the exams, he fought Rock Lee. The fight between Lee and Gaara surprised everyone. At first, Lee could not break Gaara's defense. Just as people were giving up hope for Lee, he unleashed his secret ability. Lee opened multiple chakra gates to gain speed and power that outclassed Gaara; however, Gaara managed to trick Lee. He used his sand to make a clone. Lee used his full strength on the clone, and, as such, Gaara was able to defeat the exhausted Lee. Other than this battle, he breezed though the Chunin exams as he was supposed to (killing a few on the way).
During his final exam fight with Sasuke, Garra was injured by Chidori and was left unable to perform his role in the attack. Kankuro and Temari took Gaara away to recuperate. They were followed by Sasuke, Naruto, Pakkun, Shikamaru, and Sakura. Eventually, Garra was able to user the Shukaku's power to defeat Sasuke. Soon thereafter, Gaara fought Naruto. Naruto impressed Gaara, forcing him to fully call out the Shukaku's body. After Naruto's summoning of Gamabunta he let the Shukaku take over; however, this did not last for long against Naruto's attacks defeated him.
