BackgroundPrior to the series, Zaku was homeless. He struggled to survive on the streets. During was attempt to steal food, he is beaten badly. As his attackers leave, Zaku is approached by Orochimaru. Orochimaru tells him that he has potential. Orochimaru promises to make Zaku strong if he follows.
Zaku has tubes in his arms. He uses these tubes to focus his chakra to control the air. Zaku can manipulate air streams and pressure using these tubes and his chakra.
Zaku is extremely reckless in the Forest of Death. He is quick to mock Sasuke after beating up Sasuke's squad. This mocking helped to push curse mark possessed Sasuke into pulling Zaku's arms from their sockets.
Later, Zaku, with injured arms, takes part in the preliminary exams. He fights Shino who forces him to use both his arms. In an effort to destroy Shino and his bugs, Zaku uses his tunnels in his arms; however, Shino has already plugged the holes in his hands with his bugs. Not knowing this, Zaku used his tunnels and the chakra exploded through his arms.
