Just what is this "chakra"?

As put by the honorable grandson, Konohamaru, chakra is "the elemental life energy that is used to perform jutsu. The ninja arts combine physical energy from each cell of the body with mystical energy which is intensified through training and experience. When these two chakra mix, special hand signs allow the ninja to focus this combined energy for advanced jutsu."

Chakra Gates

The chakra gates are limiters on the chakra throughout the body where chakra is most heavily concentrated. They restrict chakra flow to protect the body. Opening all the gates allows power beyond that of even the Kage, but at a hefty price.

• The Gate of Opening

  Opening the gate of opening enables the primary lotus. This releases the brain's restraints on the body allowing muscles to perform at maximum capacity. Such strength is dangerous and will easily tear the muscles apart.

• The Gate of Rest
• The Gate of Life

  This is the point that one enters the Hidden Lotus. The power is incredible; however, the stain on the body is impossible to bear for long.

• The Gate of Pain
• The Gate of Closing
• The Gate of Joy
• The Gate of Shock
• The Gate of Death

  By opening all gates including this final one, it is possible to gain power beyond that of the Kage. The only drawback is that the person will die, hence the name of the final gate.

Types of chakra

• Healing chakra

  This chakra is seen when Kabuto heals Hinata during the final rounds of the Chunin Exams. The nature of this chakra is unknown. As such, we do not know if it is any different from normal chakra or how it is used. It is show as a light green.

• Nine-Tailed Fox chakra

  This is the chakra that Naruto can access when his normal chakra is drained. It is the very chakra of the nine-tailed fox that is sealed within him. It is nearly limitless; thus, Naruto is capable to perform Kage level feats while using it. For example, he summoned Gamabunta using the demon's chakra. In addition to this vast power, the chakra drastically increases the healing rate of Naruto's body as well as improving his strength, speed, agility, senses, and just about everything else about him. It is represented as red due to its demonic nature.

• Normal chakra

• Orochimaru's Curse Mark's chakra

  This is the chakra that Sasuke gains access to during the Chunin exams. While in the forest of death, squad seven encounters Orochimaru posing as a genin test taker. After the battle was finished, Orochimaru bit Sasuke leaving a curse mark and later giving him access to this chakra. It is colored purple and reeks of evil.
