4: Pass or Fail! Survival Test!
The episode begins with Sasuke, Sakura, and Naruto waiting in a room for their jounin sensei.
Annoyed with his lateness, Naruto decides to play on trick on the sensei by placing a blackboard eraser
above the door so that it will fall on his head when he enters, much to the delight of Sakura. Kakashi
enters to be hit in the head with the eraser. He then proceeds to tell the squad that his first impression
of them is that they are a bunch of idiots.
Next each of the 4 squad members introduce themselves. Kakashi start by telling them that he wants to know their: likes, hates, dreams for the future and hobbies. They ask Kakashi to start so he tells them his full name, Kakashi Hitake, that he doesn't feel like telling them what he likes and hates, he really hasn't thought much about his dreams for the future, as for hobbies, he has lots of hobbies. Naruto interests all seem to revolve around eating raman, hating the 2 minutes you have to wait to eat it, and being the future Lord Hokage. Sakura similarly is only interested in one thing, Sasuke. Sasuke's interests seem to be much darker than the others, wanting to restore his clan and destroy, "a certain someone."
The next day they are to have their first mission, a survival exercise, beginning at 5:00 hours. It appears that this exercise is designed to weed out 18 of the 27 candidates and that they should skip breakfast, otherwise they'll puke. Kakashi is again late, explaining, "A black cat crossed my path, so I had to take the long way." The survival test is simple, it appears they have to take a bell from Kakashi by the noon, or they will not get lunch, explaining their need to skip breakfast.
After a snide remark from Naruto, Kakashi points out that class clowns are usually the weakest links, you can safely ignore them because they always get lowest scores; they are losers. Naruto attacks Kakashi, angry over being called a loser. We get a taste of Kakashi's speed as he whips around Naruto, in an instant holding his armed hand behind his back. Kakashi is pleased however with Naruto as he came at him with the full intention to kill him. Then the exercise begins.
Iruka meets with the Lord Hokage to discuss Kakashi and his concerns over his training methods. Lord Hokage gives Iruka a log of the students who have been with Kakashi showing those who have passed and those who have failed. Iruka opens it amazed at what is inside.
Meanwhile, Kakashi states shinobi techniques aloud, "Ninja must know how to conceal their movements and hide effectively." It seems they are hiding well. Except Naruto is standing a few meters away from Kakashi. Naruto proceeds to challenge Kakashi. Kakashi, non-plussed, describes Shinobi battle technique number one, taijutsu, the physical art, as he removes a book from his pocket known as, "Makeout Paradise". It appears that Naruto's weak attacks won't affect Kakashi in the least so he can read to find out what happens next in the story. Naruto attacks Kakashi only to have him whip behind him again. "Don't let your enemy get behind you all the time," states Kakashi as he prepares the "leaf village secret village jutsu, a thousand years of death," propelling Naruto my poking him in the rear.
Iruka discuss Kakashi's training methods and that all his students have failed.
Naruto continues to attack Kakashi, this time with his shadow clones. He uses one to sneak up behind and grab Kakashi. This time he gets Kakashi and punches him in the face but it appears that Kakashi used the replacement jutsu and replaces himself with one of the Narutos. The Narutos proceed to beat each other to a pulp to find out which one is Kakashi believing that he transformed. Naruto undoes the jutsu to find that Kakashi has disapeared but left a bell on the floor. He attempts to retrieve the bell only to find that it's a trap as he is whipped into the air by a rope attached to his ankle. While Kakashi reprimands Naruto for not seeing through deception Sasuke sees an opening where Kakashi let down his guard and throws a group of shuriken at him. The episode ends with Kakashi being blasted by shuriken.
