I see your point, but I still don't think forcing someone to post will do anything good...
But it would be cool to have an active community.
You'd be surprised. In this day and age, the majority of people will only do something if they have no other choice but to do it to get what they want. People come here for the anime torrents. If they have to post to gain access, then the majority of them will have no problems doing so.

There will be much less that complain than there is those that would just willingly do so. And those that complain were the ones who would be doing nothing but leeching and using bandwidth, because they otherwise would never contribute anyways. So to people like that.. who cares?

You know the majority of the people that have joined the tracker would not have joined if they didn't have to.. but has anyone complained about having to? If so there wouldn't be that many... It's the same concept here.

I'm just worried about the quality of their posts. If they had something smart to say, they would post. This way will get a lot of spam and one-word posts just to get to that limit for leeching

That is what moderators are for. They enforce the rules. They will eventually learn to post nicely, if they don't already post nicely from the start. Meh. Either way, it's better than just having a bunch of bandwidth leechers who do nothing at all.

Ahaha I won't be on a boat till June guys.

Anyway, I have always been strongly opposed to mandatory posting. I was hesitant to require even registration to download torrents.

As far as doing something about leechers...I have been experimenting with another server I have up somewhere. With some more work (and luck) to get the backend up and running, we can have ratio tracking and allow everyone to upload torrents without a special account.

Then we should force them. Don't give access to torrents unless they contribute to the community.

Then they'll just go somewhere else for torrents. I think there should be restriction on famous or really good series - that'd make more sense for them because they'll have to post to get something they really want.

I agree with Oxwil on this one. This site isn't the only place to get anime so if people are forced to do anything they'll just go somewhere else.
I think stat tracking is the way to go. Maybe restricting what they can download (or not allowing them to download anything) if they have a low share ratio would be a good incentive to prevent leeching.
They've got a pretty cool system over at bakabt with stats, bonus points and all that. Maybe implement something similar?

Maybe.. but they haven't left my site. In fact since making them have to register... the forum has tripled in pageviews. 10x on registrations, and doubled on active posting. So either people can't find what they want elsewhere thus they have to join/post here.. or they just don't care to look elsewhere.. either way it seems to be working pretty great for me.. so I dunno why it wouldn't for EA.

Well, in that case, I see nothing against it.

That'd be the noobs I guess, because like I was once, I didn't think anime would be such a thing I would find easily all over the internet. But I don't think torrent users are noobs, because to use a torrent you need to graduate from being a noob.
